Nevada license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up Nevada drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Two plates required

Nevada requires two plates — front and rear — on every passenger vehicle under NRS § 482.275. Failure to display either plate can result in fines.

Front plate rule

No exemption exists for vehicles lacking a front mounting bracket. Owners must install a bracket or face a citation under § 482.275.

Registration stickers & display

Nevada issues a registration sticker affixed to the upper-right corner of the rear plate showing the month and year of expiration. Registration is renewed annually.

Inspection / smog check

Nevada requires annual emissions testing in Clark County (Las Vegas metro) and Washoe County (Reno metro) for gasoline vehicles 1968 model year or newer. Vehicles 2 model years old or newer are exempt. There is no statewide safety inspection requirement.

Types of Nevada license plates

Nevada issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Standard Nevada / Home Means Nevada

Default plate with the iconic 'Home Means Nevada' mountain design issued in the 123·A45 format. Two plates required.

Personalized / Vanity

Disabled / Disabled Veteran
